 The Basics

So let’s start with the introduction – My name is Kaylie.

A Bit More of a Background

For those of you who don’t know me (or stalk me on a constant basis) I am just finishing my second year of nursing at UBC-Okanagan. I have spent brief periods of time in the northern sections of Thailand. Both times I was involved with my church in the years 2007 and 2008. In that time I got to know and love the children at BBF. There’s something about that country and those kids that stays with you. Even though I haven’t returned to BBF in two years, I still remember that place and the smiling faces of those children every day. My life has been completely turned upside down in the last two years and it feels like I am caught up in a whirlwind of changes. However, those kids always remain in the back of my mind.

So Where Am I Going With This

Ok, I hope I don’t need to go on and on to get the point across that these kids are on my heart. They always have been, and they always will be. I haven’t seen any of them in two years. Over half of them have left the home. If things continue on at BBF the way they’ve been in the last year, all of them will be gone. In the last few years some terrible things have happened to our BBF children. Some of our kids have been taken back to their villages as a result of conflicts amongst parents. Others have been kidnapped in the night and sold and one girl was removed from BBF and forced to work in prostitution.

The other day I was able to sit down with one of the leaders for all of the projects going on at BBF. Right now, New Heights is trying to purchase land to start… almost a community for these kids. There’s hope of rice fields, housing with a female and male residence, a piggery, and - most importantly - a church. The potential behind this plan is mind-blowing. It is a safe zone for these kids- a community that involves families as a whole. This land could cause a huge turning point for our children at BBF and give them a future that does not have the potential of being sold into child prostitution.

My Hair-Brained Scheme

As I previously mentioned, I am a student. There is very little I can do to help with the New Heights vision and there is next to NO chance of me re-visiting BBF within the next two years. But I still want to do something for those kids – I never want these kids to be forgotten. So, as of Sunday, July 11^th in Heritage park, I will be cutting off my dreadlocks as a fundraiser for BBF. My goal is two thousand dollars. If I reach that goal, I will go even further and will shave my head. I will even let people personally destroy my precious locks. On the day of you can by donation come up and cut off a dreadlock which you can then keep as a piece of me… or toss in the trash. That’s your choice.

I hope you understand I will not be receiving a penny of this money. I refuse to handle cash or cheques in my name. You can donate online or place in an envelope at church and write BBF on the envelope.

So, let’s see what the shape of my head is
